Best Designs of Puget Sound - Wet Room

The Puget Sound NKBA Design Awards Gala celebrates the best designers in the area. Design excellence, creativity, and innovative problem solving are high on the criteria list of the judges. They also score projects on a long list of technical requirements to make sure they are much more than pretty pictures, but the best functioning and responsible projects they can be.

For all those reasons, I’m proud to share that our Nomadic Nest Wet Room is a 2024 Puget Sound Best of Secondary Bathroom award winner, taking home second place. It was also an awesome event that gave us an excuse to get all dressed up and party. My tux was starting to get jealous of the hiking pants and needed some shine time.

When my clients needed a second full bathroom for their frequent overnight guests, they faced the challenge of preserving space while maintaining privacy and luxury. Adding to the complexity, they wanted to bring a touch of their favorite travel destination, Marrakech, into their home.

The Challenge: Maximizing Space and Luxury

The primary goal was to create a guest bathroom that didn’t encroach on the limited footprint. Our clients needed a space that offered privacy, exuded luxury, and impressed their guests, all while adhering to building regulations that restricted where a new bathroom could be placed. The tight space also required creative solutions to accommodate a larger kitchen and an extra bedroom.

The Solution: A Wet Bathroom with Moroccan Flair

To address these challenges, we designed a "wet bathroom" where the entire room serves as a shower area. This approach eliminates the need for separate shower enclosures and maximizes the use of space. We introduced a curb at the bathroom door to manage water flow, ensuring practicality without compromising the design.

Design Elements: Moroccan Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from Marrakech, the bathroom features pentagon-shaped concrete tiles and Tadelakt plaster, both traditional Moroccan materials, used in a modern context. The result is a space that feels both fresh and eternal, architectural yet cozy. The subtle texture, color blocking, and high ceilings evoke the grandeur and serenity of Moroccan architecture, making the small bathroom feel more spacious and luxurious.

Special Features: Practical Elegance

Key features include radiant heated floors, which add a spa-like feeling to the bathroom. A hidden niche behind the vanity wall keeps toiletries out of sight, maintaining a clean and uncluttered look. This thoughtful design not only maximizes functionality but also enhances the aesthetic appeal.

Recognition and Impact

This innovative design recently earned an award from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Puget Sound chapter. The accolade recognizes the project’s creativity and adherence to high standards of design and craftsmanship.
